Devils Thumb
On a clear day the mainland mountains near Petersburg provide excellent photo opportunities from several waterfront locations. Devils Thumb (9077 feet) is located within these mainland mountains providing a palette of changing colors and shifting shadows that will challenge even the most experienced photographer's eye.
For the more adventurous traveler and photographer, flightseeing tours of Devils Thumb are offered. Your flightseeing adventures begins soon after your departure from Petersburg. The rugged Alaskan wilderness, just outside of Petersburg, begins to unfold below the plane as you climb towards Devils Thumb. Clear blue ice fields and alpine topped mountains share their majestic beauty with moose, mountain goats, Sitka Blacktail deer and black bear that can sometimes be observed feeding or resting in the sub-alpine grasses. Humpback Whale Cruises in Frederick Sound
Petersburg is situated on Frederick Sound, a place where you'll find some of the best humpback whale viewing in North America. Kaleidoscope Cruises is a local charter that offers 8-hour whale watching trips mid-May through September. The boat even has specially equipped underwater microphones so passengers can listen to the whales.

LeConte Bay Glacier

Harbor seals choose LeConte's protected water and abundant icebergs as a breeding, birthing and rearing area. Remember not to disturb these little ones. Abandonment of a young pup by its mother is a common occurrence, particularly if they are disturbed by hunting or other activities by humans.

Chartering a float plane and flying around Alaska's inside passage and photographing the majestic scenery, special places and people, bountiful wildlife and your memorable moments in the Petersburg area is one of the many activities you can experience during your Alaska vacation. Late spring and early summer is the time when flowers bloom, fawns and bear cubs are born and nesting birds hatch their young. Midsummer provides for whale watchign, halibut fishing, King salmon fishing and watchign the long daylight hours fading into alpen glow covered mountains. Late summer offers the return of coho (silver), pink and chum salmon which provide food for bears and eagles.

Stikine Icefield and LeConte Glacier
It would be difficult to find a location more scenic than the Inside Passage. The rugged mountains, majestic glaciers and abundant wildlife makes for a truly spectacular scenic flight. Wildlife such as moose, seals, mountain goats, eagles, bear and deer may be seen.
Minutes away from Petersburg is one of the most powerful and beautiful sights in the world. The Stikine Icefield is 2,900 square miles and extends 120 miles. Many glaciers spill out of this magnivicent icefield, with three picturesque glaciers easily accessible from Petersburg. The Baird Glacier and the Patterson Glacier both spill into the Thomas Bay area and terminate at a braided outwash plain. To the south of these glaciers is arguably the most beautiful glacier in the southeast, the LeConte Glacier. The LeConte is the southernmost active tidewater glacier in the northern hemisphere. This glacier terminates in the 800+ foot deep LeConte Bay and massive icebergs break off the glacier face regularly with a resounding splash. These icebergs are home to a large population of Harbor Seals who are born and raised in LeConte Bay.
Surrounding the Stikine Icefield are the impressive peaks of the Coastal Mountain Range and Devils Thumb, which is a prominent landmark from Petersburg, stands just under 10,000 feet and marks the Canada-US border. It's North face is a sheer cliff of 7,000 feet.
