Aeropuerto: Early Airports in Latin America
In 1927, Pan American Airways built airbases in southern Florida to begin its first operations with service between the United States and Cuba. During the 1930s and 1940s, the airline achieved its ambitious goal of a vast aerial network throughout Latin America as envisioned by its president, Juan T. Trippe. The Pan American Airways System, which included more than a dozen affiliate and subsidiary airlines, such as Compania Mexicana De Aviación, S.A. (C.M.A.), Panair do Brazil, and Pan American-Grace Airways (PANAGRA), offered flights from its hubs in Brownsville, Texas and Miami, Florida to more than eighty Latin American destinations. To create these routes, Pan American had to construct its own airport facilities in urban centers and across the far-flung regions of Latin America. With the range of aircraft limited to approximately 500 miles, many of these airports were located in remote areas between towns and cities. Populations long isolated by jungles, mountains, and high deserts, now had access to airplanes capable of covering distances in a few hours that took days or weeks by riverboat or pack mule. Latin American countries welcomed these new airport facilities as a means to modernize their transportation infrastructure. By providing the capital and engineering expertise needed to complete airport projects, Pan American played a pivotal role in developing much of Latin America's early commercial aviation. Beginning in 1940, the airline also contracted work under a United States funded Airport Development Program that accelerated the establishment and improvement of ground facilities.
The photographs on exhibition present a variety of air terminals built in Latin America by Pan American Airways during this period. Ranging from modest to ornate, many terminal buildings were designed as modern interpretations of regional or local architectural styles, such as Mission Revival and Spanish Colonial Revival. Others show contemporary influences of Art Deco, Streamlined Modern, and International Style architecture. A blend of styles is seen in some terminals as improvements, and expansions were made with attempts to incorporate observation areas and control towers into the overall design.
