Billings, Montana was founded in 1882 as a railroad town and aptly named for Northern Pacific Railway's president, Frederick H. Billings. Despite its humble beginnings, Billings grew rapidly and earned the nickname "Magic City". Today it is Montana's only city with a population larger than 100,000. Billings may be a big city, but it still displays Montana's big skies and sprawling landscapes. Drive east out of Yellowstone Valley to the Little Bighorn National Monument, which commemorates the well-known 19th-century battle; opt for the self-guided Deep Ravine trail. Imagine Montana in its prehistoric days with a visit to Pictograph Cave State Park, where cave paintings over 2,000 years old are still visible. Go wild while learning about the plants and animals of Yellowstone Valley at ZooMontana.
