This exhibit features a collection of rare "breadboard" radios produced and sold by Atwater Kent, one of the premiere radio manufacturers of the 1920s. Atwater Kent realized customers were purchasing their components and using them to produce finished radios. AK reasoned that if they mounted the components and sold the complete radio, they would have a winner; they did. Seventeen different models are on display, beginning with an early crystal set, which was only sold as individual components to be mounted and finished by the purchaser, all the way to the Model 12, which officially ended the "breadboard" era for AK.

Collins Wireless Telephone
A mobile phone in 1909? This exhibit, featuring the only known surviving Collins Wireless Telephone, tells the tale of an invention that was promised to be just that. It is a story of misplaced motives, overstated claims and the appropriation of scientific potential by unscrupulous entrepreneurs mindful of only potential profits. All new technologies attract a few who value the rewards of the marketplace over others' regard for scientific achievement.
