Redding/Red Bluff City Guide

Redding is the largest city in California north of Sacramento and sits along the Sacramento River. It enjoys the distinction of being the second-sunniest city in the country, with clear days 88 percent of the year. The city first emerged as a trading center after the Central Pacific Railroad arrived here in 1872. Today, it is a popular base camp for travelers venturing out into the area's mountains and lakes. Visitors can take in a show at the art deco Cascade Theatre, or explore the history of the region at Turtle Bay Exploration Park.

Opportunities for outdoor adventure abound in Redding as well: excellent fishing can be found both in the city itself, on the Sacramento River, and at neighboring Lake Shasta. Mount Shasta to the north offers both skiing and hiking, dependant on the season, while Lassen Volcanic National Park, east of Redding, offers great scenery, an easy trek to the summit of a live volcano, streams and lakes for fishing, and numerous hiking trails.
