Bereavement Policy

Eligibility

Customers who are traveling due to death of an immediate family member, which includes: spouse, child, parent, brother, sister, half brother, half sister, step brother, step sister, step parent, step child, grandchild, grandparent, great grandparent, great grandchild, step grandparent, step grandchild, aunt, uncle, niece, nephew, domestic partner, parent-in-law, brother-in-law, sister-in-law, daughter-in-law, and son-in-law.*

* Does NOT apply to cousins or any other in-laws: i.e. nephew/niece/uncle/aunt/grandparent-in-law.

Bereavement fare is valid on Alaska Airlines, Horizon Air, Era Aviation, PenAir, Northwest, Delta, American Airlines, and any other codeshare partner airlines that will price as a AS-AS* (except for American Eagle). Any space booked on an offline carrier will disqualify the use of a bereavement fare.

This fare is also applied to anyone, regardless of relationship, who is traveling with the body, or en route to retrieve the body of the deceased. Documentation for this escort will not be necessary.

Documentation

Customer must provide the following at time of booking and the information must be obtained and entered in an OSI field:

  • Name of passenger and name of deceased person
  • Relationship of passenger to deceased person
  • Name and phone of funeral home

If no funeral service, then the name and phone number of agency or business who will handle burial or cremation must be added to OSI. Since passenger must provide information in advance, no documentation is required on return flight.

* Funeral card or funeral program are not acceptable as documentation.
Note: Agencies unable to present documentation will receive a debit memo.

Note: Bereavement discount only available when booked in advance. We no longer offer a discount or refund after travel has commenced.

Bereavement reservations cannot be made more than 7 days before departure.

  • Reservations may be made and ticketed through your GDS.
