Guidelines for Community Contributions

Alaska Airlines
Horizon Air

Alaska Spirit

Alaska Spirit springs from our rich heritage as a pioneer in a state where aviation plays a vital role in the life of every resident. From this spirit flows our belief in friendliness, service, genuine caring and community involvement.

Giving to the Community

Alaska Airlines is committed to supporting the communities where we operate and where our employees live and work.

Funding Philosophy

Alaska Airlines provides charitable contributions to not-for-profit, civic, educational and business organizations. We focus on communities served now or in the near future by Alaska Airlines and where a significant number of our employees live or work. Given limited resources, contributions are concentrated in areas with the greatest number of employees, in Alaska or Washington State for example.

When considering grant requests Alaska Airlines favors organizations and efforts that are most likely to enhance a community's cultural and economic vitality and improve the quality of life for its citizens. General contribution categories are education, social/cultural, healthcare, arts/humanities, civic, the environment and community activities.

Although Alaska Airlines' corporate giving program does support a limited number of colleges and universities, our primary method of participating in this area is by supporting our employees working to enhance the quality of education through the company's Employee Gift Matching program.

Funding comes from three main sources:

The Alaska Airlines Corporate Contributions Program
Alaska Airlines accepts requests for in-kind transportation. Limited resources necessitate very focused giving and support is generally granted on a one-time basis.

Alaska Airlines Community Advisory Boards (State of Alaska only)
In the state of Alaska, cash requests are reviewed by one of four Advisory Boards that meet three times per year. Grants awarded usually range from $250 to $500.

The Alaska Airlines Foundation
A small number of cash grants ranging on average from $5,000 to $15,000 are given to 501©(3) non-profit organizations classified as public charities in Alaska and Washington. These grants should focus on educational efforts that address a unique need or value of a community. Unsolicited applications are not encouraged. Those interested in applying to the Foundation should send a letter of inquiry before preparing a full application. Letters of inquiry must be received by September 30th of the calendar year to be considered for possible funding.

Neither the Foundation nor Alaska Airlines funds:

  • loans and grants to individuals or private business
  • groups that discriminate
  • endowments
  • religious organizations (if for sacramental purposes)
  • pageants
  • capital projects
  • multi-year commitment or automatic renewal grants
  • general operating expenses
  • publicly or privately funded educational institutions. Most schools—public or private—are eligible for funding through Alaska's Employee Gift Matching Program.

How to Apply

Requests must be received in writing a minimum of six weeks prior to the event or print deadline. Requests for Alaska Airlines Corporate Contributions may be submitted at any time during the year. However, cash requests within the state of Alaska are only reviewed three times per year. Letters of inquiry to the Foundation must be received no later than September 30th of the calendar year. A response will generally be provided within 60 days.
