Respecting and appreciating our differences is fundamental to being a world-class organization. Diverse backgrounds and perspectives lead to a better understanding of each other, inspire good ideas, and strengthen our competitiveness. Different approaches lead to a better understanding of each other, inspire good ideas, and strengthen our competitiveness. Diverse and inclusive groups promote progress; lack of diversity often means standing still or going backward.
Our customers come from a variety of backgrounds-and so it's crucial that our employees do, too. Alaska Airlines' long tradition of safety, exceptional customer service and technological innovation is enhanced by a diverse and inclusive work force. Our employees' wide-ranging backgrounds and universal commitment to our core values of resourcefulness, integrity, professionalism, caring and Alaska Spirit are critical for our continued success in this difficult airline environment.
People with different backgrounds, ethnicities, genders, experiences and expertise come together on our airplanes every day. Building a workplace where differences are respected and valued makes Alaska Air Group a much richer company. The more inclusive and understanding we are with our fellow employees, the more that will be reflected in our interactions with each of our customers. The broad range of perspectives our employees bring to the table also fosters robust discussions that help drive us to the best business decisions. This is an area where there is no downside to doing more. The more diverse we are, the stronger we are. When you think about all of the problems we have in the world today and their root causes, our efforts on diversity and inclusion are just the right things to do.
When a member of the community joins our company or customers fly on our airline, we want them to feel welcomed and comfortable. A diverse group of employees working in an inclusive environment is key to a warm, caring experience for our customers. And the unique backgrounds, ideas and thoughts shared by our employees are the reason we have been on the leading edge of aviation technology for so many years and the reason we are well-positioned to thrive as an airline.
Employees are the heart and soul of Alaska Airlines. Every job and every person is crucial to delivering on our promise to our customers-to provide an exceptional customer experience that is safe, dependable and delivered with genuine caring service.
One of our "critical success factors" at Alaska Airlines is quality people-to attract and develop talented people who share the values and spirit of Alaska Airlines. I believe one of the best ways to continue delivering on this critical element of our success is to ensure that we have diversity in our employee team that reflects the customers and communities we serve. We also need to be truly inclusive in how we welcome individuals with different backgrounds, perspectives, expertise and philosophies into our company. From a business perspective, this is a key strategy. From a people perspective, it is the embodiment of Alaska Spirit.
I am pleased that, in addition to my role as executive vice president of finance & chief financial officer, I serve as an executive sponsor for the GLOBE team. This employee resource group is made up of a cross-section of employees focused on reaching out to the GLBT communities across our route network. GLOBE has made great progress throughout the past year in terms of our visibility to GLBT customers and driven incremental business through their outreach efforts. In addition, they have worked to build bridges with other employee resource groups at Alaska and to ensure that our GLBT employees' experience is truly inclusive and welcoming.
My parents are Italian immigrants who settled in Montreal in the early 50s. They struggled with exclusion based on language and customs. My school mates were Italian, Greek, Lebanese, Turks, French and more. Fortunately we shared common values which allowed our different backgrounds to help all of us become more well rounded. At Alaska we also have people from many backgrounds, and I love that we are embracing diversity here. Our different backgrounds and experiences make us better able to relate and communicate. Our diverse teams make us operationally stronger and able to provide the best personal service. I support our ambitious goal of creating an accepting and diverse atmosphere that is part of the very fabric of our culture.
