Oxygen and Other Special Services

Supplemental Medical Oxygen

Alaska Airlines will provide supplemental medical oxygen on flights within the State of Alaska and between the State of Alaska and Seattle, WA or Portland, OR with at least 48 hours' advance notice. Supplemental medical oxygen service is not available on other Alaska Airlines routes or on Horizon Air and may not be available on flights operated by our codeshare partners. Please contact the operating carrier directly for additional information.

Once your travel plans are confirmed, please contact Alaska Airlines Reservations Department at 1-800-ALASKAAIR (TTY 1-800-682-2221) to make arrangements for supplemental medical oxygen service. A representative from the provider of this service, Aviation Mobility, will contact you soon thereafter to arrange payment.

A completed Physician's Consent Form must be presented at check-in. It must be printed and signed by your physician on his/her letterhead. The consent form must clearly state that you require medical oxygen during your flight and specify the rate of flow required per minute. Physician's Consent Form (PDF File is 121k).

You must keep the Physician's Consent Form on you at all times during your journey.

An updated Physician's Consent From must be completed whenever the patient's health changes in such a way that affects his/her fitness to fly with supplemental oxygen.

We require 48 hours' advance notice in order to verify your Consent Form and to ship the medical oxygen containers to your point of origin. We do not provide bottled medical oxygen for use at ground locations. Travelers need to make further arrangements if medical oxygen is required prior to departure, connecting, or arrival cities.

For safety reasons, passengers cannot rely on the use of the aircraft's emergency oxygen for therapeutic use during the flight.

FAA regulations prohibit the use of a customer's personal oxygen equipment during flight unless it falls under the Portable Oxygen Concentrator (POC) guidelines below.

Please note: In order to comply with Safety Regulations, customers using a supplemental medical oxygen shall be seated in a seat closest to the window and may not occupy the emergency exit or the bulkhead row (oxygen tanks must be stored under seat in front of the passenger).

Portable Oxygen Concentrator (POC)

Guidelines

Portable Oxygen Concentrator service may be arranged for Alaska Airlines and Horizon Air flight numbers 001-999 and 2000-2999 only. For service on any codeshare or subcontractor flights, please contact the operating carrier directly.

While it is not necessary to provide advance notice that you will be using a POC, we strongly recommend 48 hours' advance notice. Letting us know in advance will generally result in a smoother trip. Once your travel plans are confirmed, please contact Alaska Airlines or Horizon Air Reservations Department at 1-800-ALASKAAIR (TTY 1-800-682-2221) so we may document that you will be using your "approved" POC during your flight.

A completed Physician's Consent Form must be presented at check-in. It must be printed and signed by your physician on his/her letterhead. The consent form must clearly state that you require medical oxygen during your flight and specify the rate of flow required per minute. (This document will only be accepted if it is printed on the physician's letterhead.) Physician's Consent Form (PDF File is 121k)

You must keep the Physician's Consent Form on your person at all times during your journey. An updated Physician's Consent From must be completed whenever the patient's health changes in such a way that affects his/her fitness to fly with supplemental oxygen.

  • AirSep Freestyle
  • AirSep Lifestyle
  • Inogen One
  • Respironics EverGo
  • SeQual Eclipse
  • Delphi Medical Systems' RS-00400
  • Invacare Corporation's XPO2

Other POC brands and models may be carried in the cabin with the batteries removed, if they meet the carry-on size and weight requirements.

While you are welcome to bring your personal POC or rent from a provider of your choice, we would like to recommend our preferred POC vendor, Aviation Mobility. To arrange rental service please contact them at directly at 1-877-365-9711.

Note: The SeQual Eclipse 2 is the only POC device rated for pediatric use on our flights.

Onboard Usage

Customers are required to provide and know how to use rented or owned "approved" Portable Oxygen Concentrators for use onboard, as Alaska Airlines and Horizon Air do not provide this equipment. Any Customer wishing to use a POC must ensure that he/she has ample, fully charged batteries to power the POC for the duration of the flight and ground connection time where the POC is planned to be used (per manufacturer's recommendation), plus one additional battery for unanticipated delays. Alaska Airlines and Horizon Air do not have electrical power or spare batteries available for customers' use onboard our aircraft.

Customers must ensure that all extra batteries are properly protected from short-circuiting by having recessed battery terminals or by packaging the batteries so they do not contact metal objects, including the terminals of other batteries.

For questions regarding POC usage, please contact Alaska Airlines or Horizon Air Reservations at 1-800-ALASKAAIR (TTY 1-800-682-2221) for assistance.

Please note: In order to comply with Safety Regulations, customers using a POC shall be seated in a seat closest to the window and may not occupy the emergency exit or the bulkhead row (unit must be stored under seat in front of the passenger).

Continuous Positive Airway Pressure (CPAP)

Continuous Positive Airway Pressure (CPAP) oxygen concentrators, used for such medical conditions as sleep apnea are not approved for use during the flight. These devices must be transported in checked baggage or in a carry-on.

Customers with Cognitive and Developmental Disabilities

Alaska Airlines and Horizon Air do not have an adult assistance program in which continual care is provided. However, we do provide escort assistance to individuals who need help to and from the aircraft and assistance between gates.

Please note:

  • The escort will be unable to remain with the traveler.
  • If a traveler is in need of continual care while onboard the aircraft; for example, cannot respond to crew member instructions or assist in his or her own evacuation from the aircraft, we recommend that our customers consider traveling with a ticketed safety assistant.

Please note: Customers should not request to have an adult traveler (age 18 and older) with a cognitive or developmental disability arranged as a child traveler. Alaska Airlines and Horizon Air's Unaccompanied Minor Service is only for children ages 5-17.

Medication

Please note that we do not provide medical services or administration of medication. However, we will provide service to help safely transport medication.

  • Medication should always remain with the traveler in carry-on baggage; never in checked baggage.
  • Our aircraft are not equipped with refrigerators, so please plan accordingly.
  • Concerns about transporting medication or medical supplies through a security checkpoint can be verified using the Transportation Security Administration (TSA) standardized security screening procedures at the TSA Web site.
  • To prevent interference with the deployment of the onboard emergency oxygen masks, intravenous devices may not be suspended from the aircraft.
  • For travelers being transported via stretcher, some aircraft are equipped with an IV clip that can be used once the aircraft has reached cruising altitude.
  • The IV clip cannot be used during take-off and landing.

Contact 1-800-ALASKAAIR to request Supplemental Medical Oxygen service.

FAA regulations prohibit the use of a customer's personal oxygen equipment during flight unless it falls under the Portable Oxygen Concentrator (POC) guidelines above.

  • Alaska Airlines must be provided with the name of the doctor and medical facility ambulance service used at origin and destination as well as the condition of the traveler, and any other information pertinent to the situation.
  • The cost for stretcher transportation is calculated as the equivalent of nine (9) applicable Y/YASR1 coach class fares.
  • The customer or hospital must provide the stretcher.
  • The approved stretcher must be a "Stokes" or "Ferno 71" model. No other stretcher or gurney can be accepted.
    • Both Stokes and the Ferno 71 are basket type stretchers that are used for most rescue situations.
    • Both Stokes and the Ferno 71 have heavy duty tubular aluminum frames that are permanently attached to a highdensity polyethylene shell.
    • The Stokes litter basket stretcher is manufactured by Life Support Inter National, Inc. in Bristol PA.
    • The Ferno 71 litter basket stretcher is manufactured by Ferno-Washington, Inc. in Wilmington, OH.
  • The stretcher must be tagged with the name and address of the hospital or other organization/service to which it belongs.
  • Tagging is required should the stretcher be returned (via cargo) to its point of origin.

Peanut Allergy

Alaska Airlines and Horizon Air acknowledge customer concerns regarding peanut allergies. For this reason, we do not want to create false expectations with regard to the aircraft environment.

  • We are unable to guarantee a peanut or allergen-free flight, nor can we prevent other customers from bringing peanuts or products containing peanuts onboard our flights.
  • We will make every effort to not serve peanuts in the entire row where an affected traveler is seated, as well as the seats one row directly in front of and behind, creating a "peanut buffer zone."
  • In order to receive this service, we need the following assistance from a traveler:

    • Once a reservation is confirmed, contact Alaska Airlines/Horizon Air Reservations and notify the representative that you are requesting a "peanut buffer zone" for a traveler with a peanut allergy.
    • At the departure gate for each flight, please advise the Customer Service Agent that you have requested a "peanut buffer zone."
    • As you board the aircraft, please advise the Flight Attendant that you have requested a "peanut buffer zone."

If, for any reason, we are unable to provide a "peanut buffer zone" for a specific flight, Alaska Airlines/Horizon Air will allow the affected traveler and his or her party to change or refund their ticket(s) without a change fee.

Note: Alaska Airlines/Horizon Air meals and snacks may contain peanut-related ingredients. We encourage customers who are allergic to peanuts to bring their own food items for travel.

Customers Who Do Not Speak English

Alaska Airlines and Horizon Air do not offer translation services. However, we do provide escort assistance to individuals who need help to and from the aircraft and transport between gates.
