Sporting Equipment

The following baggage rules apply to tickets purchased on or after May 1, 2008, for travel on or after July 1, 2008.
For baggage limitations applying to tickets purchased prior to May 1, 2008, or all travel prior to July 1, 2008, please refer to the baggage section of our Contract of Carriage.

Some sporting equipment may be checked in lieu of one piece of luggage, if packaged in a suitable container. Sporting equipment checked in addition to the free baggage allowance is charged an excess fee. Items over 115 linear inches or 100 lbs will not be accepted as checked baggage. There is a fee charged in all situations for some equipment.

Note: If a bag is both oversize and overweight, the higher fee is charged.

Listed below is information for specific sporting equipment

Archery:
To be packaged in a proper soft or hard archery case containing bows and arrows.

Bicycles - $50.00:
One item of bicycling equipment is defined as one bicycle, non-motorized, with single or tandem seats. Alaska Airlines will only accept bicycles with handlebars turned sideways, pedals removed, all sharp protrusions padded, and boxed (or in a container). FREE: Small or collapsible bicycles that do not exceed the maximum checked baggage dimensions.

Bowling:
Ball must be packaged in a proper soft or hard bowling ball case. There is no limit to the number of items in the bag, as long as it doesn't exceed 50 lbs and 62 linear inches.

Camping:
Camping equipment and fuel containers that once contained liquid fuel (i.e.: camping stoves, portable heaters, and flammable liquid lanterns) are allowed as long as the fuel system is completely dry with no fuel remaining in the tank, hoses, or parts and no remaining fuel odor is evident. Any type of fuel is forbidden from transport in checked baggage. Fuel can be shipped as regulated dangerous goods through the cargo facility. Self-heating meals (i.e.: MREs, flameless ration meals) are not permitted as carry-on or checked baggage due to the risk of unintentional activation of the heating source. Customers may transport these via air cargo only. Propane and empty propane tanks may only be shipped on all-cargo aircraft. No matches/lighters are permitted in checked luggage.

Fishing:
One item of fishing equipment, defined as two rods, two reels, and one tackle box will be accepted in lieu of the free baggage allowance. Fishing poles that cannot be broken down adequately to be stowed on board in an overhead bin must be checked. Please package all fishing equipment in appropriate containers.

Golfing:
To be packaged in a proper soft or hard golf case. There is no limit to the number of items inside the bag, up to 50 lbs, and may exceed 62 linear inches, but must be no more than 115 linear inches.

Hockey:
Items of hockey equipment may be checked on Alaska Flight series 0-999. The equipment may exceed 62 linear inches, but must not exceed 115 linear inches. Customers checking hockey equipment on Horizon Flight series 2000-2999 are charged standard overweight/oversize charges. Hockey equipment may consist of hockey sticks not in a bag/box (multiple sticks must be taped/attached together) or misc. hockey equipment in a bag/box (sticks, skates, pads, pucks, gloves, etc.).

Kayaks:
Kayak paddles must be securely taped to the kayak or boxed. Alaska does not provide paddle boxes at the counter. Only kayaks of polyethylene construction are acceptable. Kayaks of glass construction are not accepted. Kayaks are not accepted on Horizon Flight series 2000-2999.

Pole Vaulting:
Pole-vaulting equipment does not require a case. Limit of two poles with maximum dimensions of 6" x 6" x 17'. Note: On Horizon Flight series 2000 the maximum single dimension is 8 ft.

Scuba:
Scuba equipment may exceed 62 linear inches, but must be no more than 115 linear inches. Items must be packaged in a proper soft or hard scuba gear case, except the scuba tank. The regulator valve must be completely disconnected from the tank. The tank must have an opening to allow for a visual inspection inside. Limit of one empty scuba tank, one regulator, one tank harness, one pressure gauge, one mask, two fins, one snorkel, one knife, one spear gun, and one safety vest. Gear must be in one container - tank may be separate. Additional items shall count as excess baggage.

Skateboards:
TA maximum of one skateboard, if not in a case, will be accepted as checked baggage. If in a proper case, there is no limit to the number of items as long as it doesn't exceed 50 lbs and 62 linear inches.

Skiing:
To be packaged in a proper soft or hard ski/snowboard bag. Limit of one pair of skis/snowboard, one pair of poles, bindings and boots. Each individually checked piece of ski equipment is counted toward the free baggage allowance.

Surfboards:
One item of surfing equipment is defined as one surfboard, not required to be in its case, or a surfboard case with up to two surfboards inside. Surfboards will not be included in determining the free baggage allowance. The equipment may exceed 62 linear inches, but must not exceed 115 linear inches. Customers checking surf equipment are charged standard overweight/oversize charges. Up to two boards in the same case may be checked for one fee. Note: On Alaska Flight series 1-999, the maximum single dimension is 9 ft. On Horizon Flight series 2000-2999, the maximum single dimension is 8ft. FREE: Boogie boards will be included in determining the free baggage allowance.

Windsurfing:
Windsurfing equipment is not required to be in a case and can consist of one windsurfing board and one mast, boom, and sail. Note: On Alaska Flight series 1-999, the maximum single dimension is 9ft. On Horizon Flight series 2000-2999, the maximum dimension is 8ft.
