How do I purchase an extra seat?
You can purchase a second seat in advance by contacting Alaska Airlines reservations at 1-800-252-7522 or Horizon Air at 1-800-547-9308. Both seats must be purchased at the same time to receive the same fare.The benefits of booking ahead of time are:
- Adjacent seating is reserved in advance
- Seats are purchased at the same low fare
- A FAA approved seatbelt extension is available on request.
What if I did not purchase the second seat in advance?
If a second seat has not been purchased at check-in time, you will be asked to purchase an additional seat before boarding the aircraft. An agent will put you in contact with our reservations department to book and ticket the second seat. There is always the possibility that there will not be enough time to purchase the seat before departure or seats may not be available so we encourage you to purchase the second seat when you make your intial reservation.Why do I have to purchase a second seat if the plane is not full?
Many things occur within the hours before a flight departs and flights that may have open seats one hour before departure may not have seats at departure time. Because of these changes, we feel that consistency is necessary in order to provide the same level of service to you at all times. Can I request a refund for the second seat if the flight is not full?
Once you have completed travel, if all flight segments between origin and destination had extra seats available, you may be eligible for a refund of the second seat for that portion of your trip. You may request a refund by using our online form or contacting Customer Care at 1-800-654-5669. Simply provide the name on the ticket, travel dates, flight information and ticket number.Do I earn frequent flyer miles for the second seat?
If you are not eligible for a refund and you are an Alaska Airlines Mileage Plan member, you can receive bonus miles for the second seat. The bonus miles are equivalent to the mileage you received for each eligible flown segment. Once you have completed travel, you may contact Customer Care at 1-800-654-5669 to request miles.
These miles do not go towards MVP/Gold status.Can anyone purchase an extra seat?
The option to purchase an extra seat is available to those individuals who require this service based on our seat dimensions. The purchase of an additional seat is required for anyone who cannot comfortably travel with the armrests in the down position. We have separate policies for both pets and cabin-seat baggage. Any customer who purchases a second seat, and who does not meet the criteria described in the second seat policy, will be ineligible for a refund.Can I use a seatbelt extension instead of purchasing an additional seat?
A seatbelt extension is not a viable substitution if a passenger cannot travel comfortably with the armrests in a down position. However, a seatbelt extension is available to any passenger. A standard airline seatbelt extends 46 inches, and a seatbelt extension adds 26 inches for a total of 71 inches.Can I use the extra seat for pets and cabin baggage?
No, we have a separate policy for both pets and cabin-seat baggage. When a passenger requests that baggage be carried in the cabin, and Alaska Airlines or Horizon Air determines that the item is acceptable as cabin baggage but is so fragile and/or bulky as to require the use of a seat, the baggage must be carried aboard the aircraft by the passenger and secured in the seat next to the passenger's seat. The charge is 100% of the applicable adult fare, non-refundable.What is the price of an additional seat?
When purchasing in advance, the additional seat is priced the same as the fare you select. These seats must be purchased at the same time to receive the identical price. If you choose to purchase a second seat at a later date, we will try to sell the second seat at the same price as the first. However, if we cannot determine your original ticket price due to a group fare or if you are traveling on a free ticket we will offer you the lowest available fare at the time of booking for the second seat.If I sit next to a family member, am I required to buy an additional seat?

The number of seats purchased determines baggage allowance. Passengers purchasing two seats are allowed four pieces of checked baggage each. Additional checked bags, or bags over 50 lb. weights or acceptable size dimension will incur a fee, as usual.Please refer to our Know Before You Go page for baggage specifics. Each passenger may have up to one carry-on item plus one personal item with them on board the aircraft to fit in the overhead bin or below the seat in front of them.
Can I book a second seat on flights operated by other airlines?
You cannot book a second seat for flights operated by carriers other than Alaska Airlines and Horizon Air. Every air carrier has its' own policy for purchasing a second seat. You must contact the airline directly to learn the specifics of their second seat policy.If I need to change my reservation will I be charged a change fee for both seats?
If you need to change your reservation you will be charged a single change fee to complete your transaction, however we cannot guarantee all flights will have the required additional seat space until the change is made and seat space can again be confirmed.If I need to change my reservation will I be charged the difference in fare for all seat spaces?
If you change your reservation you will responsible for any difference in fare in addition to a single change fee.Will I be allowed to pre-board the aircraft?
If you require extra time to board the aircraft, please feel free pre-board when the announcement is made.- You can do this, but you run the risk of not getting your seats together. In the event of a full flight, we cannot guarantee accommodations for the traveler who does not purchase an extra seat.
Can I use a companion certificate or miles for the additional seat?
You can use your companion certificate to purchase a second seat. In the event your flight is not full, your companion certificate will be reissued for later use.- Title II of the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA), Section 12141(2), specifically excludes airline travel. Airline travel is instead, covered by the Air Carrier Access Act (ACAA), 49 U.SC. 1374© and regulations implementing the Act issued by the Department of Transportation as 14 CFR Part 382. The ACAA preceded the ADA, and Congress excluded air carriers and other air transportation services from the scope of ADA.
