Alaska Airlines would like to introduce you to the Spirit of Disneyland® II - the newest Disney-themed airplane in the fleet. The new design replaces the original Spirit of Disneyland® aircraft retired last month.
The plane made its innagural flight on December 18th, 2009 from Portland to Los Angeles and was welcomed to the gate by three Make-A-Wish® children who traveled to the Disneyland® Resort to have their wishes granted.
Thanks to the longer fuselage of the Boeing 737-900, Mickey Mouse's faithful friend Pluto joins the cast of Disney characters.
The Spirit of Disneyland® II joins the Magic of Disneyland® and Spirit of Make-A-Wish in the Alaska Airlines Route System.
Removing the old livery gives the perfect canvas for the five special images.
After receiving her base coat, details are applied to Minnie's face.
Mickey's image takes shape on the tail. This is only the second time Mickey Mouse has been on the tail of an airliner.
An artist applies details to Goofy. More than 104 different shades of color were used on the plane's design.
Base and shadow coats are applied to Pluto. The longer fuselage of the 737-900 means we can add a character to the cast.
Pluto is unmasked for the first time. Note that every window requires its own masking to protect it from the paint.
The new design features Mickey's shoes, which were unseen on the previous Spirit of Disneyland.
Mickey's image is polished while masking for Pluto and Donald starts to get removed.
The finished plane, now sporting more than 300 gallons of paint is ready for rollout from the paint hangar.
