Portable Oxygen Concentrator (POC)
Portable Oxygen Concentrator service may be arranged for Alaska Airlines flight numbers 001-999, 2000-2999 and 3450-3499 only. For service on any codeshare or subcontractor flights, please contact the operating carrier directly.
While it is not necessary to provide advance notice that you will be using a portable oxygen concentrator (POC), we strongly recommend 48 hours advance notice. Letting us know in advance will generally result in a smoother trip. Once your travel plans are confirmed, please contact Alaska Airlines Reservations at 1-800-252-7522 (TTY/TDD: 1-800-682-2221)
so we may document that you will be using your "approved" POC during your flight.
A customer using a POC must have a signed written doctor's statement from his/her physician on the physician's letterhead. You may have your physician draft his/her own letter but Alaska Airlines recommends having your physician select the following link to print and fill out our Physician's Consent Form (PDF File is 49k).
Prior to boarding, the customer must present the Physician's Consent Form or their physician's statement to an Alaska Airlines employee.
- Patient is able to operate the POC and recognize and respond appropriately to its alarm.
- The phases of the flight, (taxi, take-off, in-flight, landing) during which use of the POC will be necessary.
- The maximum flow rate corresponding to the pressure in the cabin under normal operating conditions (cabins are pressurized to an altitude of 8,000 feet).
Patient understands that he/she must bring an ample supply of fully charged batteries to power the POC for duration of the flight and ground connection time, plus one additional battery for unanticipated delays.
You must keep the Physician's Consent Form on your person at all times during your journey. An updated Physician's Consent Form must be completed whenever the patient's health changes in such a way that affects his/her fitness to fly with supplemental oxygen.

Other POC brands and models may be carried in the cabin with the batteries removed, if they meet the carry-on size and weight requirements.
Customers are required to provide and know how to use rented or owned "approved" Portable Oxygen Concentrators for use onboard, as Alaska Airlines does not provide this equipment. Any Customer wishing to use a POC must ensure that he/she has ample, fully charged batteries to power the POC for the duration of the flight and ground connection time where the POC is planned to be used (per manufacturer's recommendation), plus one additional battery for unanticipated delays. Alaska Airlines does not have electrical power or spare batteries available for customers' use onboard our aircraft.
Customers must ensure that all extra batteries are properly protected from short-circuiting by having recessed battery terminals or by packaging the batteries so they do not contact metal objects, including the terminals of other batteries.

Please note: In order to comply with Safety Regulations, customers using a POC shall be seated in a seat closest to the window and may not occupy the emergency exit or the bulkhead row (unit must be stored under seat in front of the passenger). POC may be used during take off/landing as long as it is remains stowed under seat in front of the passenger.
Ventilators, Respirators, and CPAP Machines
Portable electronic personal ventilators, respirators, and continuous positive airway pressure (CPAP) machines approved by the FAA may be carried and used on board Alaska Airlines, at no charge, in accordance with specific FAA guidelines.
A forty-eight (48) hour minimum advance notification to reservations is required for customers using a ventilator, respirator or CPAP machine onboard. Reservations will ensure the device you are planning to use is on the list of current, approved devices and will provide guidance on the number of batteries you will need for your flight.
The U.S. Department of Transportation/FAA permits air carriers to accept only those devices with manufacturer labeling indicating the device meets FAA requirements. Alaska Airlines currently allows devices not meeting the new labeling requirements, providing the device is on our list of approved devices. Please contact Alaska Airlines reservations for questions regarding the approved list.
Please note that aircraft in-seat electrical power is not available for ventilators, respirators or CPAP machines. Therefore, customers must have an ample supply of fully charged batteries plus 3 hours of extra battery time for the flight to cover any unforeseen delays. Additionally, customers using a ventilator or respirator should travel with backup manually-operated supplies in case of failure of their electronic equipment en-route. Alaska Airlines does not carry such equipment on-board our aircraft.
Ventilators, respirators and CPAP machines are considered assistive devices. They must be stowed and used in the passenger cabin consistent with applicable TSA, FAA and other regulations governing carry-on luggage. Some seating restrictions may be necessary to comply with certain FAA safety rules.
Customers with Cognitive and Developmental Disabilities
Alaska Airlines does not have an adult assistance program in which continual care is provided. However, we do provide escort assistance to individuals who need help to and from the aircraft and assistance between gates.
- The escort will be unable to remain with the traveler.
- If a traveler is in need of continual care while onboard the aircraft; for example, cannot respond to crew member instructions or assist in his or her own evacuation from the aircraft, the customer must travel with a ticketed safety assistant.
Please note: Customers should not request to have an adult traveler (age 18 and older) with a cognitive or developmental disability arranged as a child traveler. Alaska Airlines Unaccompanied Minor Service is only for children ages 5-17.
Please note that we do not provide medical services or administration of medication. However, we will provide service to help safely transport medication.
- Medication should always remain with the traveler in carry-on baggage; never in checked baggage.
- Our aircraft are not equipped with refrigerators, so please plan accordingly.
- Concerns about transporting medication or medical supplies through a security checkpoint can be verified using the Transportation Security Administration (TSA) standardized security screening procedures at the TSA Web site.
- To prevent interference with the deployment of the onboard emergency oxygen masks, intravenous devices may not be suspended from the aircraft.
- For travelers being transported via stretcher, some aircraft are equipped with an IV clip that can be used once the aircraft has reached cruising altitude.
- The IV clip cannot be used during take-off and landing.
FAA regulations prohibit the use of a customer's personal oxygen equipment during flight unless it falls under the Portable Oxygen Concentrator (POC) guidelines above.
Alaska Airlines provides stretcher service on flights within the State of Alaska and between the State of Alaska and Seattle, WA. The traveler must be accompanied by at least one assistant who must be able to supervise and care for the customer traveling in the stretcher during the flight. An escort may also be included if requested. The following conditions, with some restrictions, must be met prior to reservation acceptance:
- The reservation must be made at least 48 hours in advance.
- The customer traveling on the stretcher must not weigh more than 275 lbs.
- Alaska Airlines must be provided with the name of the attending physician, medical facility, ambulance service used at origin and destination, condition of the traveler, ability to travel and any other information pertinent to the situation.
- The cost for stretcher transportation is calculated as the equivalent of 9 applicable Y/YASR1 coach class fares which includes travel for the customer in the stretcher, the stretcher, the attendant and an escort if requested.
- The customer or hospital must provide the stretcher.
- The approved stretcher must be a "Stokes" or "Ferno 71" model. No other stretcher or gurney can be accepted.
- Both Stokes and the Ferno 71 have heavy duty tubular aluminum frames that are permanently attached to a highdensity polyethylene shell.
- The Stokes litter basket stretcher is manufactured by Life Support Inter National, Inc. in Bristol PA.
- The Ferno 71 litter basket stretcher is manufactured by Ferno-Washington, Inc. in Wilmington, OH.
- The purchaser shall provide 4 qualified individuals, capable of lifting 150 lbs each, to perform load/unload functions for the customer traveling in a stretcher at both the departure and arrival cities. Alaska Airlines employees may not physically assist in these loading/unloading functions.
The below documentation must be provided to an Alaska Airlines representative at the first point of contact when you arrive at the airport:
- A completed Application for Stretcher Travel form
- The information contained on this form must also be provided to Reservations at least 48 hours prior to flight departure.
- A written medical certificate from the attending physician stating at least the following information:
- The patient is capable of completing the flight without extraordinary medical assistance.
- The patient's current condition and ability to travel
- Name of the attendant flying with the patient
- Any other special needs
- A Physician's Consent Form (PDF File is 121k) must be completed if medical oxygen will be needed. If a portable oxygen concentrator (POC) will be used, the customer must provide a Physician's Consent form or a written physician's statement containing the same information. Some first class meals and meals for purchase in the main cabin may contain nuts. Additionally, we cannot prevent customers from bringing peanuts or products containing nuts onboard our flights. Therefore, Alaska Airlines is unable to guarantee a nut- or allergen-free flight. Attempting to do this would create a false sense of security for passengers with severe allergies. We encourage customers who are allergic to nuts to bring their own food items for travel and consult with their doctor regarding the safety of air travel.
Alaska Airlines does not currently fly to any countries that require airlines to treat the passenger cabin with insecticides but we recognize that you may be connecting on us to one of our many partners internationally that do fly to these countries. If you would like more information, please refer to the Department of Transportation website that has more information on this topic and what airlines and countries require the use of insecticides.
Customers Who Do Not Speak English
Alaska Airlines does not offer translation services. However, we do provide escort assistance to individuals who need help to and from the aircraft and transport between gates.
We offer specific seating accommodations for customers with certain types of disabilities. Customers who are entitled to special seating include:
- Travelers who use an aisle chair to board the aircraft
- Travelers who cannot readily transfer over a fixed aisle armrest
- A person traveling with a safety assistant who will be assisting that individual during the flight
- A person traveling with a service animal
- A traveler with a fused or immobilized leg
- A traveler using a Portable Oxygen Concentrator (POC)
A ticketed safety assistant is required under the following circumstances:
- The customer is unable to assist in his or her own evacuation from the aircraft in the event of an emergency.
- The customer cannot respond to crew member safety instructions.
- The customer has both severe hearing and vision impairments and cannot establish communication with crew members that is adequate to permit understanding of the safety briefing.
If it is determined that a customer must travel with a safety assistant, but the customer is unable to provide one, Alaska Airlines may deny travel.
Please notify Reservations at least 48 hours in advance if you will be traveling with a safety assistant, so we can provide you and your safety assistant adjacent seats on the aircraft.
Alaska Airlines aircraft are subject to federal accessibility requirements for customers with disabilities. Depending on aircraft type and age, additional seats with movable aisle armrests are available beyond the specific reserved seats for disabled travelers.
