Set on the Snake River that runs from Wyoming to Eastern Washington, Idaho Falls was first developed when an industrious settler began running a ferry to shuttle travelers from one side of the river to the other in 1864. Not long after, a bridge was built downstream and the small outpost (originally called Taylor’s Crossing) grew as a key junction to the West. The city is now named after the picturesque waterfalls that also generate hydroelectric power. Take in the views from the Idaho Falls River Walk, a five-mile trail along the scenic riverbanks. Immerse yourself in nature even further with a two-hour drive to see either the majestic mountains of Grand Teton National Park or Yellowstone National Park’s famous landmarks.
