Adak, Alaska Overview
This remote destination is in the middle of the Aleutian Islands, a chain of around 200 islands that extends outward from southwest Alaska and separates the North Pacific Ocean from the Bering Sea. It was developed as a naval base after World War II, which eventually closed in 2000 and left a small settlement of locals there. Half of the island is part of the wild and unspoiled Alaska Maritime Wildlife Refuge.
