Animated
"The moon is made of tinkling gold stars - and you can reach it by climbing a ladder. Old books soar aloft like flocks of birds - and they settle on people's shoulders, perching with spindly little legs. A chicken is right at home walking down a city sidewalk - and seems able to survive a zombie apocalypse, too. An Englishman heads to the wide plains of early 20th century Alberta, to start a ranch - but starts daydreaming instead. And the Sunday routines of a small-town family include church and a big meal - and bracing for the train that shakes the house when it trundles by.

A mobile phone in 1909? This exhibit, featuring the only known surviving Collins Wireless Telephone, tells the tale of an invention that was promised to be just that. It is a story of misplaced motives, overstated claims and the appropriation of scientific potential by unscrupulous entrepreneurs mindful of only potential profits. All new technologies attract a few who value the rewards of the marketplace over others' regard for scientific achievement.

See a full-scale diorama with an original rare Marconi wireless set that accurately reproduces the actual radio room on the Titanic, outfitted just as it was on the famous ship's tragically brief maiden, and only, voyage. Imagine the activity in that room as the night of April 14, 1912 gave way to April 15 and the last "Marconigram" was transmitted at 12:17am. The CQD call, the Morse code D for danger added to the international signal asking all stations except the caller to cease sending and listen, went out from the Titanic's wireless room for the final time. Hear a description of the Titanic's fateful encounter with an iceberg and the sounds of the spark transmitter's calls for help through the dark night from the cold waters of the North Atlantic.

This three hour paddle is one of the most scenic and varied available in the Bellingham area. You will travel south along impressively scalloped sandstone cliffs. Often there are river otters, seals, cormorants, eagles, loons and oyster catchers along this relatively pristine shoreline to view. The destination is Chuckanut Island in Chuckanut Bay. This island is an archaeological site owned by the Nature Conservancy and is well known for its visible shell midden (refuse from 10,000 years of native Salish people's use). There will be period of rest where you can stretch your legs on its beaches and trails, before reloading into the boats for the trip back to the Boating Center. Please note that this trip requires a minimum of four participants.
