Redmond is the starting point for the Prineville scenic drive - a 50-mile route that takes drivers through starkly stunning high-desert landscape. The drive encompasses towering rock formations, serene mountain brooks, and arid desert landscapes. Waypoints include Smith Rock State Park, Crooked River National Grasslands, and two placid reservoirs, the Ochoco and Prineville.

Popular with rock climbers, Redmond's Smith Rock State Park offers thousands of climbs on its many miles of canyon faces. If you're new to the sport, more than 1,000 of these climbs are bolted routes, making it easier to find your way to the top. Those who don't climb but like to see climbers challenge themselves in a beautiful surrounding will enjoy the park as well. Keep a keen eye for eagles, deer, and beaver.

Said to be drawn to the scent of alcohol, the jackalope often appears only to those who have been enjoying fine wine, beer and spirits. Deschutes Brewery, one of the nation's most revered microbreweries, is located in Bend's Old Mill District. With such favorites as Black Butte Porter-named for a nearby mountain-and Obsidian Stout, Deschutes beer has found a devoted following. Tours of the brewery are offered Monday through Friday and include free beer tasting.
