Kalispell, Montana

The city of Kalispell, Montana was named from the Salish word for "flat land above the lake." The lake that the name refers to is Flathead Lake, one of the largest freshwater lakes in the U.S. And if that natural wonder wasn't enough, Kalispell is just a short distance from the grand peaks and valleys of Glacier National Park.

Explore some of the two million acres in Glacier National Park with a cruise along the Going-to-the-Sun Road. See artists' interpretations of Montana's natural beauty with a visit to the Hockaday Museum of Art, housed in a century-old former Carnegie Library. Wander around the Conrad Mansion Museum and see how the founder of Kalispell, Charles E. Conrad, and his family lived. Rent a kayak and make your way toward Wild Horse Island State Park where you can hike, picnic, and keep an eye out for wildlife.

Check out the Montana Club for a warm and filling breakfast of hickory bacon and eggs or pecan waffles. Stop by Hop's Downtown Grill for a rich Swiss burger with sautéed mushrooms and a pint of local Montana ale. Grab a scoop - or three -of huckleberry ice cream at Norm's News.
