Ketchikan, Alaska Overview

Famous for its salmon runs, Ketchikan is an angler's paradise. In fact, the city has been given the moniker of Salmon Capital of the World, a lofty title that the city's many fishing charter companies are eager to prove. While fishing is certainly the area's bread and butter, there are other exceptional activities and attractions to be experienced in Ketchikan.

Sea kayaking the inlets and shoreline of Ketchikan is popular with those who enjoy the quiet of nature and the chance to get up close to sea life, including whales and orcas. For the more culturally minded, Ketchikan is also home to one of the largest collections of totem poles in the world, and a visit to Saxman Native Village is a visitor's best bet for viewing these iconic statues.

Natural wonders abound in Alaska, and Ketchikan is no exception. Mother Nature is at her best at both the Rainforest Wildlife Sanctuary, where visitors have the opportunity to feed Alaskan reindeer and get up-close to a sanctuary-trained bald eagle, and the 2.3 million acres of stunning scenery that is Misty Fjords National Monument. One of the best ways to see these areas is to charter a seaplane tour. Experienced bush pilots can take you on a grand tour of the area around Ketchikan. Another facet of life in Ketchikan is the crabbing industry - try this dangerous job out for yourself on a Bering Sea Crab Fishermen's Tour.
