The last Saturday in April is a significant date to generations of anglers who make an annual pilgrimage to the Mammoth Lakes area. This is the beginning of trout fishing season in Mono County. Thousands of hardy souls take to local waters in float tubes, kayaks and boats, sometimes enduring freezing temperatures in search of their first trophy sized trout of the year. As the calendar advances more lakes and streams become accessible and the choice of fishing spots multiplies. Regular stockings of Alper's Rainbows in the Mammoth Lakes Basin and Reds Meadows waters ensure that even the novice fisherman has a fighting chance of hooking dinner. Enlisting the services of a local fishing guide will greatly improve your chances of catching fish. Don't forget all anglers over the age of 16 are required to have a California Fishing License. Single, multi day or season passes are available from any fishing store.

Hiking in Mammoth Lakes
The Town of Mammoth Lakes is a small island of humanity set in a vast region of public and wilderness lands, more than two million acres of it. This is the landscape that inspired John Muir and Ansel Adams, a land that can be explored on an endless number of hikes radiating out from Mammoth. Pack a lunch and head out on a hiking trail that will take you to crystal clear lakes, through dense forests and to breathtaking viewpoints in the clouds.

Horseback Riding in Mammoth Lakes
One great way to see Mammoth's backcountry is by horseback. Local pack outfitters offer hour-long, half and full-day rides as well as week-long excursions into the Ansel Adams and John Muir wilderness areas. A 2-hour ride, perfect for families, takes you to Heart Lake in the Mammoth Lakes Basin, passing by a historic gold mine and mining camp. Other favorites include the guided rides along Convict Lake, McGee Canyon, Rock Creek and Red's Meadow. Relax and enjoy the Sierra scenery while the horses do what they love. For a real old west experience you can be a working cowboy on a horse drive during the spring and fall seasons. No experience necessary - they'll show you the ropes.

Mountain Biking in Mammoth Lakes
In summer, Mammoth Mountain's ski slopes are transformed into a mountain bike paradise. Riders of all abilities and conditioning levels can enjoy its extensive trail system. The Scenic Gondola provides uphill access for mountain bikers, along with the Bike Park shuttle, which begins at the Village at Mammoth.
The park offers more than 100 miles of dirt single-track trail with a 3,000 foot descent from the summit. Mammoth Mountain Bike Park opened its newest freeride trail, Twilight Zone last summer. The highlight of this trail is "The Deep End", a nine-foot high, 50-foot wide, elevated, banked wooden bowl structure.
