Mazatlan, Mexico

Mazatlán isn't just a beautiful and lively resort town. It is also a cosmopolitan city layered with history. The Spanish set up camp here in the mid-16th century. During the 19th century, this city was settled with Germans, occupied by Americans, blockaded by the British, and bombarded by the French - hence the unique cultural blend that is Mazatlán.

Orient yourself to the city with a stroll along the malecon. At nearly 21 kilometers long, it is the longest promenade in the world. Visit the Centro Histórico - or Old Mazatlán - and wander through the ornate Immaculate Conception Cathedral. Catch a show by the Ballet Folklorico or a touring symphony at the restored Angela Peralta Theater. Linger over lunch on the Plaza Machado. Ride the waves or just watch them roll in at the quiet Playa Cerritos.

Savor Sinaloan dishes like cilantro fish filet and roasted tomato salsa at Topolo's. Try the hearty shredded beef in tomato sauce dish called ropa vieja at Cuban-Mexican restaurant Carlos and Lucia's. Taste test blue agave and tequila at Los Osuna distillery just outside the city. Settle in for a sunset cocktail and enjoy views of the Olas Atlas beach from the rooftop bar of the Best Western Posada Freeman Express
