Collection Highlights from Europe, Ancient Greece and Rome
This revitalized gallery now presents important works from the Center's ancient Mediterranean collection, including portrait reliefs from Palmyra, red- and black-figure Attic vases, marble torsos from Rome, and Cypriote vessels. Other sections of the gallery are devoted to European paintings, sculpture, and works on paper dating from about 1500 to 1800. Due to their sensitivity to light, works on paper cannot remain on view very long, so this space will present small, focused displays that will change twice a year. Celebrating the new installation of classical antiquities, the first rotation will examine the European fascination with ruins.

Extreme Makeover: A Fresh Look at the Cantor Arts Center's Contemporary Collection
Opening December 15 and then ongoing, this floor-to-ceiling reinstallation of the contemporary gallery juxtaposes new acquisitions with familiar pieces and works that have been off view. Anchoring the display are works by Bay Area figurative and abstract expressionist sculptors and painters based in California, such as Manuel Neri, Jeremy Anderson, John Cederquist, Alvin Light, James Weeks, and Frank Lobdell. Modern and contemporary pieces acquired in the last decade are carefully selected for the varied groupings in this display and include works by Robert Arneson, Isamu Noguchi, Elmer Bischoff, Joan Brown, and Al Held. The prominent south wall features vibrant color field paintings by artists such as Jules Olitski, Frank Stella, and Miriam Schapiro.

Star Trek the Exhibition
Prepare for the arrival of Klingons, Romulans, Cardassians, Borgs and, of course, Vulcans as Star Trek the Exhibition sets a course for The Tech Museum in its only Bay Area appearance. The extraordinary exhibition includes the original costumes, genuine props and authentic recreations of sets from all five Star Trek television series and 11 Star Trek feature films, including the new box office smash hit, which chronicles the early days of James T. Kirk and his fellow U.S.S Enterprise crew members. The strength of the exhibition resides at the point where science meets science fiction. Every Star Trek series features men and women who go beyond perceived boundaries to find and connect with new worlds. But for every Kirk, there is an Armstrong; for every Scotty, there is an Einstein; for every Bones, there is a Pasteur. The exhibition brings Star Trek's characters to life and reminds us of the pioneering efforts of real life scientists and explorers.
