Traveling with infants and children

We know that traveling with kids can be an adventure. To help keep the adventure fun for both you and your child passenger, please carefully review our policies and recommendations for traveling with infants and children.

Age restrictions

While there is no minimum age for infants traveling with us, check with your doctor if you're unsure your infant should be traveling via plane.

As of their second birthday, children are no longer considered infants. The Federal Aviation Administration requires all children who have reached their second birthday to occupy their own seat and travel on their own ticket.

Alaska Airlines reserves the right to require proof of age for any child passenger. Please be prepared to provide a birth certificate, passport, or other documentation upon request.

Infant on lap

Each ticketed adult may travel with one lap infant. To add a lap infant request to your reservation, call Alaska Airlines reservations at 1-800-252-7522 with your confirmation code.

Because of the location of extra oxygen masks:

  • Alaska Airlines flights 1-1999 - only one lap infant is permitted per row (including both sides of aisle)
  • Alaska Airlines flights operated by Horizon Air 2000-2999 - only one lap infant may sit on each side of rows 6-21.
  • Alaska Airlines flights operated by SkyWest 3300-3499 - one lap infant is allowed per row on the right side of the aircraft only.

Lap infants are not permitted in the emergency exit rows, in the rows immediately in front of or behind any exit row on Alaska Airlines flights 001-1999.

Lap infants are not guaranteed a seat, but if there is an empty seat available on a flight, the infant may occupy that seat for no extra charge.

When traveling with a lap infant, a diaper bag will count toward the standard carry-on limit of the ticketed adult passenger. Lap infants are not entitled to their own carry-on allowance.

Lap infants in the First Class cabin are not eligible for complimentary meals.

Guests traveling with a lap infant on one of our partner airlines booked on alaskaair.com or via reservations must purchase an adult fare ticket for their lap infant (the infant will occupy a seat). All travelers, regardless of age, must purchase an adult fare/mileage award ticket and will receive a seat and their own baggage allowance when applicable. .

Car seats fly free

We will transport your child's car seat and stroller free of charge as checked baggage. You can check these items with your other baggage, or wait until you reach the gate area.

This also applies to stroller-wagons that are designed for, and actively used for, carrying children and are collapsible to under 90 linear inches and 35 pounds. Standard bag fees/rules apply to larger wagons, those not designed to carry children, or those carried in addition to a stroller.

Visit our Batteries and electronics page if the car seat, stroller, or wagon has a battery or power bank.

Give your lap a rest

While your infant can travel on your lap until his/her second birthday, you can still choose to purchase them a ticket at the regular adult fare which comes with a seat, its own carry-on luggage allowance, and the ability to earn Mileage Plan™ miles.
