Nestled in the Rocky Mountains is Montana's capital, Helena. The city was founded in 1864 during a gold rush so large that it created around 50 millionaires in Helena by 1888. Helena's wealth helped create magnificent natural parks and beautiful public buildings and private homes. Survey Helena's classic architecture, including the St. Helena Cathedral and the original Governor's Mansion with a ride on the Last Chance Train tour. Be sure to stop inside the Montana State Capitol Building and enjoy murals by Montana artist Charles Russell. Stop into General Mercantile for a steaming cup of coffee, and read the paper or browse the store's unique goods. Get out into the legendary Montana wilderness. Fish or go camping in the breathtaking Helena National Forest, or climb trail 1906 to the top of Mt. Helena and take in sweeping views of the city and surrounding countryside.
