Houston is the largest city in Texas and fourth largest in the Unites States. The city was founded in 1836 and named after Sam Houston, who had just been elected president of the Texas Republic. Houston is an urban center, but one that takes its green space seriously, with well over 300 parks. Get a glimpse of Houston's greenery with a visit to the 445-acre Hermann Park. Walk the exercise paths, picnic along the calm Brays Bayou, and explore the bold installation art. Right next to the park is Houston's popular Museum District. Take your time admiring the famed Impressionist collection at the Museum of Fine Arts where Thursdays are free. Relive Texas history with a day trip to the well preserved early 19th century Varner-Hogg Plantation.
