Located 330 miles north of the Arctic Circle, Barrow is the northernmost town in the United States. Also known as Utqiaġvik, the traditional Inupiat name, the city honors its past while looking to the future. Rustic cottages may have fox or wolverine skins drying outside, while inside residents watch cable TV and browse the Internet. Whaling is at the heart of Barrow life; the Inupiat Heritage Center is the place to explore local whaling culture, and the Nalukataq traditional spring whaling festival happens in June. Spend time at Freshwater Lake for exceptional bird watching. Head to Pigniq Station to see ducks, seals, and walrus in the summer – and it’s possible to watch polar bears from a distance there. Walk on the summer beach near town and watch turquoise ice float gracefully in the pristine sea.
