Petersburg is at the tip of Mitkof Island, halfway between Juneau and Ketchikan on the Inside Passage. Abundant salmon, halibut, cod, crab, and prawns thrive in these waters, and people have fished for their living from this port for at least two thousand years. Norwegian fisherman arrived in the late 1880's - the Little Norway Festival celebrates Petersburg's Scandinavian history every May.
Hundreds of humpback whales make their home in Frederick Sound - you can best see them in July and August. Sandy Beach Park is a beachcomber's dream of seashells and driftwood. By the end of April, trees on Petersburg's waterfront are filled with bald eagles ready to nest and fish to feed their young. Take the short boat ride to Kupreanof Island and hike the 3.6 mile Petersburg Mountain Trail - you'll see stunning views of Petersburg and the surrounding glaciers.
