In the far Western corner of Texas, El Paso – Spanish for “the pass” – is situated along the Rio Grande, the river that forms a natural border between the United States and Mexico. Just over the river is the Mexican city of Juarez. First populated by maize farmers as far back as 12,000 years ago, El Paso is now the largest of the US - Mexico border cities. Take in wide views of El Paso and Juarez from the Scenic Drive Overlook on the edge of the 24,247-acre Franklin Mountains State Park. Climb Franklin Mountain along the 7.2-mile North Mount Franklin Trail, or explore attractions like the El Paso Museum of Art and the National Border Patrol Museum. El Paso is also a point of entry for visitors driving southeast through desert terrain to remote parts of West Texas, including Big Bend National Park or the small desert town of Marfa, now a famous arts hub.
