Plan a trip to Belize City

As the largest city in Belize and its former capital, Belize City is the ideal place to land and experience this vibrant country. The area was originally settled by the Mayans as far back as 2500 B.C., with the civilization’s peak occurring around 250 A.D. Today, English is Belize’s official language and U.S. dollars are accepted everywhere, making this Caribbean country an accessible place for a memorable vacation. Belize City is the gateway to the famous cayes, pronounced "keys” (like the Florida Keys). Water taxis depart up to ten times per day to Ambergris Caye and Caye Caulker. From either island, explore one of the longest barrier reefs in the world while snorkeling or diving before returning to land to enjoy a delicious seafood feast. Because Belize is such a small country (roughly the size of Massachusetts), many of its must-see spots are easily accessed by car or bus from Belize City. Head three hours south to relax on the pristine beaches of Placencia or venture inland to try cave tubing and ATV adventures in the jungle. You can also visit several Mayan archaeological sites throughout the country, including Atun Ha and Caracol.
