Settled in 1701 as a trading post of New France, Detroit became the largest 18th century French village between Montreal and New Orleans. This is the hometown of Aretha Franklin and Diana Ross, and chosen home in the 1940's of Delta Blues legend John Lee Hooker. Learn about the city’s musical legacy at the Motown Historical Museum. Check out Cliff Bell's jazz bar for live nightly music in a 1930's Art Deco atmosphere, and visit jazz-age Detroit at the Cafe D'Mongos speakeasy downtown. And explore the Detroit Institute of Arts, built in 1885, a crown jewel of this town - as is the spectacular 1920's Fox Theater. On Saturdays, Detroit's Eastern Market brims with fresh apples, blueberries, and roses grown by farmers from across the Midwest.
