The area has been a popular escape for decades—Thomas Edison and Henry Ford both had winter estates here. Today, Edison’s Seminole Lodge and Ford’s neighboring property, The Mangos, are open for visitors to tour the botanical gardens, historic homes and experimental laboratories. To get your toes in the sand, Fort Myers is lined with white-sand beaches including Bowman’s Beach and Bowditch Point Park. On Sanibel Island, go see seashells by the seashore at the Bailey-Matthews National Shell Museum, the only shell museum in the U.S. Between Fort Myers and the open sea you’ll find acres of wetlands, including the Six Mile Cypress Slough Preserve with a tranquil boardwalk trail and interpretive center. Get even closer to nature at Manatee Park where you can rent a kayak and look for Florida manatees in their natural, non-captive environment.
