Originally founded in the mid-18th century as a place of rest for travelers moving between the region's larger cities, Liberia is now the capital and the largest city of the Guanacaste region. It's also a jumping off point to experience a variety of treasures including lush parks, beautiful beaches, and traditional Costa Rican fare. Don't leave Costa Rica without trekking through the Rincon de la Vieja National Park, and take a day to hike to the summit of the volcano. Wander through the park on horseback and spot wildlife like armadillos, squirrel monkeys and even vampire bats.
