Plan a trip to Tokyo
Tokyo is a city where centuries-old tradition meets dazzling modern energy. Japan’s capital is a sprawling metropolis of distinct neighborhoods, from the neon-lit streets of Shinjuku and Shibuya to the quiet temples and gardens of Asakusa and Ueno. It’s a place where you can savor world-class sushi, shop cutting-edge fashion, and find moments of calm in a centuries-old shrine—all in the same afternoon. Few cities reward curiosity quite like Tokyo.
Things to do in Tokyo
- Cross the famous Shibuya Scramble, one of the busiest pedestrian crossings in the world.
- Visit Senso-ji, Tokyo’s oldest temple, in the historic Asakusa district.
- Explore the trendy boutiques and street art of Harajuku and Omotesando.
- Take in sweeping city views from the Tokyo Skytree or Tokyo Tower.
- Wander the Meiji Jingu shrine and its surrounding forest in the heart of the city.
- Sample fresh seafood and street food at the Toyosu and Tsukiji Outer Markets.
Best time to travel to Tokyo
The best times to visit Tokyo are spring (March to May), when the cherry blossoms bloom, and fall (September to November), when crisp air and colorful foliage make for comfortable sightseeing. Summer is warm and humid with lively festivals, while winter is cool and dry with fewer crowds and festive seasonal illuminations.
Getting from Narita and Haneda to Tokyo and nearby areas
Tokyo is served by two airports, and how you reach the city depends on where you land. Haneda Airport sits just about 9 miles south of central Tokyo, and the fastest way in is by train—the Keikyu Airport Line and Tokyo Monorail both reach major hubs like Shinagawa and Hamamatsucho in roughly 15 minutes, with onward connections via the JR Yamanote Line to Shibuya, Shinjuku, and Tokyo Station. Narita Airport is farther out, about 37 miles east of the city, where the JR Narita Express reaches Tokyo Station in around 60 minutes and the Keisei Skyliner reaches Ueno in about 45 minutes. From either airport, the orange Airport Limousine Bus offers a comfortable, direct ride to major hotels and stations and is a great option if you have heavy luggage. Taxis and ride-hailing apps are also available, though fares from Narita can be considerable given the distance. Picking up an IC card like Suica or PASMO on arrival makes hopping between trains and buses across the region seamless.
