Plan a trip to Yakima
In 1884, the Northern Pacific Railroad opted to bypass the original site of Yakima. Undaunted, the townspeople used horses and rollers to move a hundred buildings to the new railroad station, and rebuilt the town there. Yakima is still a robust and creative place; discover hiking explorations, fine wineries, and experiences that offer a little of both. The Rattlesnake Hills wine trail is a good example - green rolling hills are dotted with over two dozen Yakima Valley wineries. Then, head just west of Yakima to the streams, sage fields, flower meadows, and canyon bluffs of Cowiche Canyon Conservancy. Follow hand painted signs on the Cowiche trails for "the winery." They lead to the Wilridge Vineyard, where you can picnic on the lawn. Heading 50 miles further west takes you to the White Pass Ski Area, with groomed trails for all levels and beautiful hiking when the snow melts.
